Spelling of middle name?

[edit]

Lewis, The Feathery Tribe (2012) and the Auk obituary (http://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/auk/v071n02/p0236-p0238.pdf) both spell his name John Livzey Ridgway. The Smithsonian web page (http://siarchives.si.edu/findingaids/FARU7211.htm) spells him John Livesy Ridgway. Harris's piece inThe Condor (http://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/condor/v029n04/p0177-p0181.pdf), on first glance, just has John L. Ridgway. What source(s) spell it "Livsey"? Dgorsline (talk) 13:36, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it's authoritatively "Livzey," because that's how the artist himself signed his paintings -- with his full name, including his middle name, which is unambiguously "Livzey." The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History has a number of examples of his artwork, all signed thusly. Can someone change the display title to the proper spelling? I can't figure out how to do so. Daniel Lewis, Ph.D. 17:31, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

SarahStierch points to the Library of Congress authority record, which has John Livesy Ridgway, consistent with the Smithsonian source. Dgorsline (talk) 12:04, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per communication with SarahStierch, I am adding the alternate spellings to the lead, and I am pursuing a birth/death record for JLR to get a definitive spelling. Dgorsline (talk) 11:45, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per communication with colleagues at the Library of Congress (I'm the Chief Curator of Manuscripts at the Huntington Library), I've gotten LC to remove the incorrect "Livesy" from the main authority record and have added cross-references for the variants. The new heading, as of 13 Jan. 2015, is: Ridgway,John L., 1859-1947. Daniel Lewis, Ph.D. 19:19, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
